Correct nail prep helps your gel polish to stick, however, did you know that nail techs are not legally allowed to cut cuticles in New Zealand? We're only allowed to push them back and buff any residue off the nail plate with a buffer or e-file.

Cutting cuticles (or removing any live tissue) is classed as minor surgery and is not covered under a nail tech's qualifications in New Zealand. If your nail tech is cutting your cuticles or removing a lot of skin, s/he may be exposing your body to a risk of infection, and it may be time for you to find a new (qualified) nail tech.

One of the biggest (and hardest) lessons I had to learn as a nail tech was not to compare myself to anyone else.

- Progress is different for everyone, and it only comes with (lots of) practice.
- Each nail tech has a different style.
- Some are good at hand-painted nail art, others are good at something else.
- Find your unique niche, the place where you're comfortable and have the most fun doing what you love.
- Don't force yourself to try be someone you're not.
- Don't ever compare yourself to anyone else, you're not them.

1. Picking or peeling off gel polish or other product - it takes off layers of the natural nail - nails may even feel soft or sensitive after picking off product.
2. Over-aggressive preparation.
3. Incorrect removal - not soaking for long enough, or filing off too much.
4. Biting nails instead of filing them.
5. Picking cuticles and skin around nails.
